The Georgia M&M's
Written by HeMan and DeTour - March 12, 2002

We climbed atop Springer in search of the plaque,
Our journey had begun, no time to look back.
Katahdin in 180 days,
Where the hell is that 1st A.T. blaze!
They say Georgia is no tease,
It’s time to get going…More Advil Please!

Up down, Up down, Up down,
Miles, Miles, Miles,
When will it ever get flat?
And will someone please turn down the wind and turn up the thermostat!
From aches and pains to moans and groans,
Frozen boots to mossy stones,
Quarter size blisters and wounded knees,
As we reach for the poles…More Advil Please!

With the rain rolls in the wind and fog,
Sights and sounds of birds and frogs,
A hint of spring with a crisp morning breeze,
We don our packs…More Advil Please!

An 8-degree morning, the wind rips through,
A shelter full of 9, frozen toes turned blue!
A dusting of snow and ice has covered the trees,
Blood Mountain lay ahead…More Advil Please!
We hobbled in to Walasi-Yi,
Dinner that night was an A.Y.C.E.
Three plates later ready for some zzz’s,
In search of our bunks we went…More Advil Please!

Into town we went with our friends Lynn and One Match,
In search of the ever infamous Blueberry Patch,
Bunks made of Poplar, mattresses out of hay,
The woodstove kept us warm throughout our stay.
With the sound of the bell came the best breakfast in town,
Sausage, biscuits and pancakes how did they get them so round?
Fresh homemade blueberry syrup right from the tree,
It must be the Southern hospitality!
Who else would have lent out their keys?
Rejuvenated we leave…More Advil Please!

Forging creeks and streams to mountain brooks,
On to another foggy overlook,
Down into NOC for more bagels and cheese,
And Oh-yeah, don’t forget…More Advil Please!

Fields of boulders,
More weight on my shoulders,
Two dinners tonight,
And my pack will feel light!
From duct tape to mole skin,
You may wonder where our feet have been,
To keep them walking with ease,
I will need some…More Advil Please!

From shelter to shelter and tent sites in between,
The landscape through which we travel is very pristine,
From oaks and hemlocks to beeches and pines,
The forest around us has weathered the times.
So it all goes to show that on a journey such as this,
Dreams do come true and should never be dismissed!

**This poem was written on March 12th, 2002 during an eleven-mile hike through the Nantahala National Forest. As we hiked along we created stanzas and later put them on paper as we rested our legs. It's amazing what the mind thinks about when one walks for 8 hours a day every day! Can you guess what the Georgia M & M's are? AYCE means All You Can Eat Buffet, and yes we did eat 3 plates of good southern food!!
